Richard Bennett wins Assassins despite foul weather

Rain swollen muddy water is what everyone found when they got to the launch this morning. With the forecast calling for heavy rain for the day all the anglers started putting on their rain gear right after backing their rigs in. Guys were looking on their cell phones to find the latest weather report. At least the fishing was good for the anglers today. Out of 12 anglers 9 weighed in fish. It was a shoot out at the top with only 5 oz. separating the top four. Richard Bennet figured out the most productive pattern fishing the muddy water to bring in a 8 lbs. limit. Jimmy Dorris brought in a 7 lbs. 15 oz. limit to grab second. Timmy Dickens caught third with a limit weighing 7 lbs. 10 oz.

The Bass Assassins Tournament Series just had their first long break of the year between tournaments. Anglers were able to reflect on their performances for the first quarter of the season. They looked back at where they are in the ranks and where they need to be. Don't let this break fool you into thinking they were taking it easy between tournaments. I spoke to several different anglers competing for the AOY Race and Classic contention recently. They used this extra time to look over maps of the area, get out on the water to do some scouting, ready tackle, and put game plans together for the 5th event of the season. Mother Nature has also thrown us another curve ball in weather but tournament director Chris Basey and the rest of the anglers have prepared accordingly. The tournament has been moved over to the East Pearl HWY 90 launch site for flooding and safety reasons. All of the anglers have prepared and put their game faces on for this event. Other local tournaments have been bringing in well over 12 lbs to the scales to land in the money. With another round of unstable weather for the latter half of the week should make this tournament pretty interesting come Sunday morning. This should be another shoot out and I would expect to see big bags being brought in to the scales, and leaderboard changes for the AOY Race.

Bass Assassins AOY Update

This is how things are shaping up after the first four events of the season. We have a back and fourth battle brewing up in the AOY Race. The top 3 positions are being shuffled around in each tournament between Jimmy Dorris, Chris Basey, and Beaux Lasiter. Jimmy has a 40 point lead on Chris with Crawford's Landing on the horizon. Jimmy is always a threat on the river and is looking to make another good showing for event number 5. These guys know what it takes to battle for AOY glory with each having high finishes in other local points races in the past. Each angler will try to keep a firm grip on the covenant AOY crown and will be looking to battle it out on the river on April 6th. As it stands now (if we were to end the season today) the top 13 anglers in the AOY points race will be qualified for the classic. Beaux Lasiter, Ronald Pierre, and Kyle Hill are double qualified having won events this season and that opens up 3 additional spots for Classic contention. 14TH place Jason Pittman is also already qualified for the Classic by winning event 2 on Bayou Liberty. Anglers in 15th place on down would be just outside the cut line and would be looking to qualify for the Classic through the RP3 Wildcard event in December. The only anglers that can breathe a sigh of Classic relief at this point are the first 4 event winners of the season. Things should really begin to take shape as we approach the midway point of the season for event numer 9. We still have plenty of events left this season for things to shake up for both the AOY and the Bass Assassins Classic. Only 4 events into the season and we already have ourselves a slug fest brewing in the AOY Points Race.
